Interview: Clean Cut Kid

Clean Cut Kid are a Liverpudlian four piece made up of Mike and Evelyn Halls, Saul Godman and Ross Higginson. Their songwriting draws influences from classic rock and their indie pop sound is reminiscent of Arcade Fire and Architecture In Helsinki. They are signed to Polydor Records, and have festivals like Latitude, Glastonbury and most recently a high up the bill set at TRNSMT in Glasgow.  I spoke to them earlier in the week, and this is what we talked about.

Which bands and artists inspired you to make music?

We all take inspiration from so many different artists. Mike is the main songwriter and is very inspired by the classic songwriters like Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Paul Simon. As well as artists like Peter Gabriel.

Arcade Fire and Bon Iver are always played in the van.

You’ve supported bands like Kaiser Chiefs, The Kooks and Courteeners. Who’s your favourite band you’ve opened for?

To pick a favourite is too hard. They have all been such amazing acts to open for and so accommodating to us. We just love getting the chance to play to a room full of potential new fans.

What do you think is the best song you’ve ever made?

To pick a best song is too hard. However, I think Vitamin C is a very good example of the band’s bold sound.

Arcade Fire, The National or neither?

We love both! Suburbs is our favourite album. It’s genius.

After finishing your tour later this year, what’s next for Clean Cut Kid?

We are currently working on the next album. Mike is setting up his own studio and has already started writing some amazing new material. So we are dead excited for that.
